Okay, so I got the fleece (Joann's is having a sale 50% off blizzard fleece until July 31st), and ordered the zorb, enough to make 2 bedspreads with 2 layers of zorb and some extra pads to put under hideys...

So here is my question. I am debating whether to sew the zorb layers directly to the fleece or if I should leave the fleece separate and then I can change the design/pattern when I want to, like holiday pattern for Christmas, pastels at Easter, etc... What is your opinion?

If I do sew the fleece that I have to the zorb and I want to change the fleece pattern, I could always just layer a different fleece right over the top and then the fleece would be a double layer...

Our cat Rachel, is a totally indoor cat who never comes in contact with other cats. She's always had rabies, feline leukemia and distemper vaccinations as we had an outdoor cat, Bill. No lectures or debates please. Bill was an adopted stray and we could never get him to stay inside as he'd spent many years outdoors (we thought he was five when we got him, but now suspect he could have been much older). He was always welcome inside and would sleep with us, etc. but when he wanted out, he wanted OUT or else. We had to have Bill put to sleep due to renal failure last summer, so we only have Rachel now.

My question is, Rachel's annual vet visit is coming up. I really see no need for distempter or feline leukemia vaccinations. I guess, on the rare chance a bat got in the house, we should have a rabies shot. I don't know if we legally have to, but to be safe we will. What do experienced pet owners think about the distemper shots? Our cats get so sick after having them and I have read they are actually detrimental to their health.

Rachel is 8 yrs. old.

The only thing I can say for sure is that they haven't gotten worse.
I know asking when I should see signs of improvement greatly varies depending on many things but I'm afraid that the antibiotic may not be working and i'm just letting the illness get worse inside before I can notice it.
I have seven more days of medication before I go back to the vet, hopefully the coughing and breathing improves. The are acting normal otherwise, coming out when they hear me with their food, eating hay, drinking water, moving around. One of the pig's hair is a bit roughed up which is a symptom of URI as I've read.

So this thread isn't a complete rant and pity thread, I was wondering what exactly this little tidbit of information on doxcycline converts to -
Can anyone tell me what this is in CC's? I tried googling a conversion number but i'm just bad at this stuff.
I'm currently giving my pigs 0.5CC's. No, i'm not considering changing the vet's daily dosage.

I'm toying with the idea of a self cleaning cage and I'd like to get feedback on this. I'd like to build it but I want to make sure it is safe for the pigs. It would still be a C&C cage but the floors would be slightly sloped. The grids on the main floor will be sloped 3" in the middle. The whole cage will be lined with coroplast and I will be using fleece pads. The question is, are there any health risks for them to be living in a non-leveled cage? It would be like living on a giant ramp. There will be holes for poops to fall down into the trays on the side of the cage. I will use PVC pipes to block off the sides so there is no way the pigs can step into the holes. The PVC pipes will be raised 1" off the cage floor. For the hayloft, the hayrack will prevent the pigs to get to the holes on the side. The hayloft will be 6" slope.

By the way, I did read the thread about the unsafe self cleaning cage on eBay. Besides the fact that that cage doesn't have walls, and the pigs may step into the holes in the floor or living on hard surface. I can't think of anything else that would be harmful. I think my design has fixed all those issues.

Please provide ideas to improve it. Here are some pictures.

My four pigs have been quite social and friendly while in their table-top cage. I had to make a large (8 x 3) cage in our decent basement this summer as we have no AC. They seemed much more skittish and leery of me. It just occurred to me that they are on the floor, the overhead light is in back of me, and I am casting a shadow over them and also looming whereas I was more on their level before. Shadows and looming are surely signs of a predator to them ! Some some posters are upset that their pigs are scared and shy, so perhaps keep this in mind. This may have been discussed in the past, but it is worth mentioning again.

So the pet store in a distant town (they do not sell live pets) said they could order Sweet Meadow pellets for me and I'd save almost $10 per bag on shipping. I said they must be plain Timothy, no alfalfa. The owner had the shipment and I was in a rush. Got the bags, purple bag that said Timothy. Got 2 -5 lb. bags and was thrilled. Got home and it is the BLEND with alfalfa. Darn it all. He special ordered, but I am hoping he can exchange it.

Question. I am getting low (5 lbs perhaps) on the Timothy. Could I feed one bag of this to the pigs (two 3 month olds, two 2 year olds). I know the alfalfa would be fine for the little ones, but I do not know how to feed them this, yet not have the adults eat it.. since they graze on it. I do not know how to give the plain to the adults and this to the babies or if it would not harm the adults to have it if I mix with the remaining Timothy. Any advice appreciated.

Hi!

I've liked this website from years back but am new to the forum. It looks like a great place. :)

My 6 1/2 year old teddy has been losing hair on his belly, spreading to his sides and now his back, for about a month. He has had 2 Ivermectin SQ treatments followed by 1 Revolution with no signs of improvement. His weight has been down a little but until Monday his appetite and behavior had been normal. All skin scrapings were negative. There are no sores or other marks or flaking. He got sick from the Revolution (12 days ago) but that was temporary.

He was active and eating plenty on Sunday. Monday he had GI stasis, which had me very worried and we went to the emergency vet. He was prescribed Baytril (5 days), Reglan (3 days) and critical care. Tuesday was not good at all, then Wed I started giving him activated charcoal (apart from meds) and belly massages. Now he's much better and back to how he was last week- insisting on lots of veggies. (Belly xray, teeth, lungs all OK; Temp was low.)

I am concerned that he continues to lose hair and itch. He is scheduled to return to vet this weekend. A skin biopsy is a possibility. Endocrine issues have come up but the itching is confusing. His hair-loss does not look like the pictures I've seen for dermatophytes.

Is there something that connects the hair-loss and GI stasis? Any ideas about other causes of hair-loss with itching that do not respond to the treatments he had, and other treatments I should ask about?

Thanks!
PF

Here's the situation; last night when I gave my piggies their veggies, both of them ate fine. They had 4 leafs romaine lettuce, 2 small watermelon rinds, 2 baby carrots, one leaf of spinach (they had two leaves the night before, but I found this one mixed in with the lettuce, so I fed them it), and 4 green beans. Both of them ate like mormal.

This morning though, when I gave them their pellets, Shelia went crazy like normal, but Brownie stayed in her pigloo, even though she loves her pellets (Oxbow Cavy Cuisine, btw). I put the bowl right in the opening of her pigloo . . . still no luck. I took her out, and she didn't seem as skittish as she normally is. Typically this would be good, but it added to my worries. I tried feeding her the pellets alone. Nothing.

So, I brought out the veggies, and offered her a baby carrot, her favorite. She didn't eat it. I also tried lettuce but with no luck. I ran out of hay maybe 2 weeks ago (I know) and will be getting some today. I know this is WAY to long to go without hay and I know I am a bad piggy mommy to not have taken care of this sooner. . . I feel terrible, but could this be the reason she's not eating? She also seems uncomfortable when I was petting her by her back legs or bottom. She would do that squeaking twitch thing. She even did it a couple times when I wasn't touching her. Lastly, when I put her back in her cage she went straight for her pigloo.

Her bottom isn't wet and she looks normal.

What could this be and what could be the cause of it? Thanks so much.

I've convinced my boyfriend to let me adopt a couple more piggies. We have two adult boars and one 3mth old boar. The adults get tired of my young piggies energy quite quickly and I feel like he has no one to get in trouble with. Hence, looking to adopt a couple more young piggies so they can go on adventures and get in trouble together.

I had wanted to bring in two piggies from the same place so that they'd be heading into this new world with a friend. I haven't had much luck finding anything for weeks. Finally, last night, I posted a wanted ad on craigslist and woke up to an email!

They have three piggies at 6mths. Soooo, now I'm wondering... Do I have room for three piggies, making a total of 6? I'll post a picture, but I have a 2x7 L-shaped base with a 2x3 U-shaped loft.

Thoughts?
